USA Today has never told America who to vote for in a presidential election.

But they claim it's time to step into the fray of anti-endorsements because never in the 34-year history of the paper has a candidate as unqualified as Donald Trump emerged and ascended so close to the White House.

"This year, the choice isn’t between two capable major party nominees who happen to have significant ideological differences," the paper says. "This year, one of the candidates — Republican nominee Donald Trump — is, by unanimous consensus of the Editorial Board, unfit for the presidency."

The paper won't endorse Hillary Clinton, either, but instead recommends voters "stay true to your convictions." Whatever that means.

"That might mean a vote for Clinton, the most plausible alternative to keep Trump out of the White House," the paper's editorial board writes. "Or it might mean a third-party candidate. Or a write-in. Or a focus on down-ballot candidates who will serve the nation honestly, try to heal its divisions, and work to solve its problems."
