Uber’s CEO is taking a leave of absence

Kalanick didn't say how long he will be leaving for.

Uber cofounder and CEO Travis Kalanick will take an unspecified leave of absence from the company following an internal investigation prompted by public allegations of sexual harassment and gender discrimination.

According to a report compiled by a team of internal investigations led by former Attorney General Eric Holder, Uber “should evaluate the extent to which some of the responsibilities that Mr. Kalanick has historically possessed should be shared or given outright to other members of senior management.”

The 13-page report suggests that Uber overhaul almost every aspect of the company as it relates to employees. It covers everything from “[instituting] and [enforcing] clear guidelines on alcohol consumption and the use of controlled substances,” to devoting adequate staff to human resources and establishing a diversity board. The Uber board has said it plans to adopt all of the report’s recommendations.

The company is also planning on rolling back its culture of long hours and working on weekends. The report also recommended changing its catered dinner policy to serve more employees and adding work from home policies for parents. “Uber should reformulate its written cultural values because it is vital that they reflect more inclusive and positive behaviors,” the report says.

Kalanick himself has been criticized as the source of the company’s “bro culture.” Earlier this month, a leaked internal email that read like it was sent by a fraternity president showed Kalanick giving employees guidelines for sleeping with each other at a company party.
