Currently Bezos’ number stands at $89.3 billion after a $1 billion windfall on Wednesday. His overall net worth gained $2.2 billion this week alone thanks to a sweet 2 percent bump in Amazon’s stock. Bezos officially became the second richest person in the world in June just after Amazon's plan to acquire Whole Foods was announced. It’s likely that the next substantial increase in the company’s share price will allow the humble bookseller to breathe the rarefied air only Bill Gates enjoys. Maybe to celebrate he’ll buy another newspaper.
Update: He did it! Bloomberg reports that Bezos, who was the fourth-richest person in the world at the beginning of the year, is now the wealthiest human being on the planet.
