World Dispatch: Oh, to be a spiky-haired kid again

On this episode, we’re talking about ‘Kingdom Hearts’ and the joy of video games.

Every Monday through Thursday, The Outline World Dispatch brings you stories about Power, Culture, and the Future. We guarantee you’ll feel smarter and more hydrated. Hosted by yours truly.

When I was 10 years old, I walked into a GameStop with my mom and saw posters for a video game that would change my life. Donald Duck and Goofy stared wistfully at the sky alongside a few spiky-haired anime-esque characters that I’d never seen before.

The poster was for Kingdom Hearts, where you play a young boy battling darkness in the Disney realms. Oh, and characters from Final Fantasy show up. Ahead of its third main installment, I spoke with Outline culture editor Jeremy Gordon about growing up with the game, and what it means to revisit things you loved as a kid.
