Here at The Outline, we recognize that fireworks are not a universally appealing aspect of the Fourth of July. Some of you may prefer looking at a nice picture, gif, or silent video of fireworks in the comfort of your home, but even that can be a bit repetitive. So, we come to you offering something different: long-exposure, defocused photographs of fireworks.

Clearly, these aren’t your typical photos of fireworks. They come closer to resembling the bloom of an tropical flower, with thick, symmetrical petals. Perhaps, you think this just looks like a technicolor dandelion. That is also perfectly valid. Dandelions are nice, too.

If you so happen to be into in-person firework viewings, photographer David Johnson describes how to replicate these kinds of photos on his personal blog (with a professional camera, at least). You press the shutter button just before you predict a firework is going to pop—beginning out of focus. As the firework explodes, you refocus your lens until the firework is perfectly in focus, and then quickly let go of the shutter.
