Like everyone who works out, I like to have psych-up music on hand. For the last year or so, my go-to has been the Wonder Woman theme composed by Junkie XL in collaboration with Hans Zimmer — an electric cello solo that slices like lightning through the thunder of drums. When I need to hit a one-rep max, Wonder Woman gets me there every time.
Junkie XL, a longtime musician and producer turned composer, has now scored several films centering around strong women, beginning with Domino in 2005 through to the Tomb Raider reboot that will be in theaters at the end of this week. Staff writer Paris Martineau talked with Junkie XL to discuss how he approaches composing for these characters using the latest tools to meet the complexity demanded by our political climate.
